It’s wedding anniversary season, but what anniversary present to get the wife? We’ve covered the first five wedding anniversaries here according to the tradition of giving a certain material at each anniversary.

First Wedding Anniversary

Traditionally, the gift is made from paper

Gift ideas:  an album or scrapbook pre-filled with photos or keepsakes from your first year together;  framed wedding vows; a poem about her or portrait.

Second Wedding Anniversary

Gift is traditionally made using cotton. This is because cotton was once a sign of wealth and a source great of wealth.

Gift ideas:  cotton lingerie is an obvious choice for a husband to give his wife;  household cotton items such as bed sheets, tablecloths and napkins should never be given husband to wife!

Third Wedding Anniversary

It’s tradition that the gift should be made with leather

Gift ideas:  Jewellery (esp. necklaces with leather laces), jewellery rolls and leather jewellery boxes,  expensive shoes or handbags, leather covered journals and photo albums, purses, wallets or i-pod holders, folding photo frames. Fetish wear best avoided.

Fourth Wedding Anniversary

Traditionally flowers or fruit are given

Gift  ideas:  easy-peasy – just send flowers! But,  a little more originality may be appreciated, so why not give a fruit or flower shaped, printed or patterned gift instead?!

Fifth Wedding Anniversary

Traditionally contains wood

Gift ideas:  plant an ornamental tree; give a wooden memory or trinket box; choose wood scented gifts (those made pine, cedarwood or sandalwood in the ingredients) like candles or perfume; there is even wooden jewellery to choose from.
